NJ FamilyCare Renewal Information: Important Q/A about renewing your health insurance coverage

Q: Does my health insurance coverage renew automatically every year?

A:
No. To keep your insurance coverage you will need to renew it annually.


Q: How do I know when it is time to renew my health insurance coverage?

A: Before your coverage ends, NJ FamilyCare will send you a renewal packet stating that you must renew your NJ FamilyCare coverage approximately 30 days prior to your last day of coverage.


Q: What happens if I have not yet received a renewal packet?

A: Please contact NJ FamilyCare to verify your contact information and request a renewal packet at 1-800-701-0710/TTY 1-800-701-0720 from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday and Thursday to 8 p.m.


Q: What number do I call at Healthfirst NJ to get assistance with renewal of my health insurance coverage?

A: The Member Services Department is available to assist with questions at 1 -888-GO4-HFNJ (1-888-464-4365) / TTY 1-800-852-7897 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.


Q: Do I have to meet someone in person to renew my health insurance coverage?

A: You have the option of completing and mailing the form to NJ FamilyCare yourself or you can call Healthfirst NJ at -888-GO4-HFNJ (1-888-464-4365) / TTY 1-800-852-7897 and we can schedule a representative to come to your home or a location near you to assist you in completing the renewal application.


Q: What documents do I need to provide in order to renew my health insurance coverage?

A: Proof of income, such as recent pay stubs or a copy of NJ Tax forms and all schedules (if you are self employed).


Q: Why do I need to resubmit documentation with my renewal if I am already a member?

A: You must submit updated documentation to make sure you still qualify for NJ FamilyCare.  The law requires it.


Q: Can I choose a new PCP when I renew?

A: Yes, you may change your Primary Care Provider (PCP) at any time during the year  by calling the Healthfirst NJ Member Services Department at 1 -888-GO4-HFNJ (1-888-464-4365) / TTY 1-800-852-7897.


Q: Will any of my benefits change when I renew?

A:  If you stay with the same program your benefits will not change, however, your benefits are subject to change if your program type changes.  Your program type may change if your income or household size changes.


Q: What happens after I complete my renewal application?

A:  You must mail your completed application and supporting documentation to NJ FamilyCare.  If there are problems with your application, NJ FamilyCare will notify you by mail.  NJ FamilyCare will let Healthfirst NJ know if you remain eligible to receive your health insurance benefits.


What must you do to maintain coverage?

  1. Look for the respond-by date on your renewal form, fill out and mail back before the due date to keep your coverage.
  2. If you mail the form to NJ FamilyCare yourself, keep a copy of the form and documents.
  3. Do not send original copies of important documents.  In addition, do not forget to sign the form.
  4. Never ignore a letter from Healthfirst NJ or NJ FamilyCare even if you recently renewed your coverage or already mailed your packet. Sometimes more information is needed.
